And Aaron had already told them before [the return of Moses], "O my people, you are only being tested by it, and indeed, your Lord is the Most Merciful, so follow me and obey my order." 90 They said, "We will never cease being devoted to the calf until Moses returns to us." 91 (Moses) said: "O Aaron! what kept thee back, when thou sawest them going wrong, 92 That thou followedst me not! Hast thou disobeyed my command? 93 'Son of my mother,' Aaron said, 'take me not by the beard, or the head! I was fearful that thou wouldst say, "Thou hast divided the Children of Israel, and thou hast not observed my word." 94 Moses asked, "Samiri, what were your motives?" 95 He answered: "I have gained insight into something which they were unable to see: and so I took hold of a handful of the Apostle's teachings and cast it away: for thus has my mind prompted me [to act]." 96 Musa (Moses) said: "Then go away! And verily, your (punishment) in this life will be that you will say: "Touch me not (i.e. you will live alone exiled away from mankind); and verily (for a future torment), you have a promise that will not fail. And look at your ilah (god), to which you have been devoted. We will certainly burn it, and scatter its particles in the sea." 97 Your Allah is only Allah, than Whom there is no other Allah. He embraceth all things in His knowledge. 98 And so We narrate to you the stories of the past, and We have given you a remembrance from Us. 99 Whoever turns aside from it, he shall surely bear a burden on the day of resurrection 100 And will live for ever under it. How evil the burden they will carry on the Day of Doom! 101 The Day when the Trumpet will be sounded: that Day, We shall gather the sinful, blear-eyed (with terror). 102 In whispers will they consult each other: "Yet tarried not longer than ten (Days); 103 We know well what they will say when the most upright among them will say: "You did not tarry more than a day." 104
