The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
I swear by the star when it goes down. 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he deluded; 2 Nor does he speak out of desire. 3 It is only an Inspiration that is inspired. 4 something that a very powerful one has imparted to him, 5 very strong; he stood poised, 6 while he was in the highest horizon; 7 He (Gabriel) then came nearer and nearer. 8 two bows' length away, or nearer, 9 And he revealed to His Servant what he revealed. 10 The heart did not deny, what it saw. (The Holy Prophet was bestowed with seeing Allah – see also preceding verses 8, 9, 10.) 11 will you, then, contend with him as to what he saw? 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 Near the lote-tree of the last boundary. 14 close to the Garden of Refuge. 15 When that covered the lote-tree which covered it. 16 The eye did not turn aside, nor did it exceed the limit. 17 for indeed he saw one of the greatest signs of his Lord. 18 Have ye then considered Al-Lat and AL-'uzza: 19 And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third? 20 Are there sons for you, and daughters for Him? 21 Behold, such would be indeed a division most unfair! 22 They are but names, named by you and your fathers. Allah has not sent down any authority for them. They follow conjecture and their soul's desire, eventhough the guidance of their Lord has come to them. 23 Or shall man have whatever he fancies? 24 But it is to Allah that the End and the Beginning (of all things) belong. 25
