A throng of the ancients 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 They will find themselves in scorching wind and scalding water, 42 and under the shadow of black smoke, 43 neither cool nor refreshing. 44 For that they were wont to be indulged, before that, in wealth (and luxury), 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 And they used to say, "When we die and become dust and bones, are we indeed to be resurrected? 47 And also our forefathers? 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 shall be gathered to the appointed time of a known day. 50 Then you erring ones, you that cried lies, 51 Will be eating from trees of zaqqum 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 lapping it down like thirsty camels.' 55 That is their accommodation on the Day of Recompense. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Just consider (the semen) that you emit, 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 in replacing you with another creation like you, changing you into a form which you do not know. 61 You have known the first creation, then why do you not reflect? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 is it you that sow it, or are We the Sower? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 Verily we are undone. 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 And have you seen the water that you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 We could make it brackish, if We pleased; so why do you not acknowledge thanks? 70 Have you considered the fire which you strike? 71 Is it you who produced its tree, or are We the producer? 72 It is We who have made it as a reminder and a means of comfort for the people. 73 Then magnify the Name of thy Lord, the All-mighty. 74
