The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
O you enveloped in your cloak! 1 Arise and warn! 2 And your Lord (Allah) magnify! 3 And your clothing purify 4 and flee from the statues! 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 But for your Lord be patient. 7 Then, when the Trumpet is sounded (i.e. its second blowing); 8 That will be- that Day - a Day of Distress,- 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave Me with the one I created alone 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 and children living in his presence, 13 and whom I have provided with every resource, 14 Yet he wants that I should give him more. 15 By no means! Verily he hath been unto Our signs a foe. 16 Soon will I visit him with a mount of calamities! 17 Indeed he thought, and inwardly decided. 18 But may he be cursed how he plotted; 19 Again, death seized him, how was his determining! 20 He then dared to lift his gaze. 21 Then he frowned and he looked in a bad tempered way; 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 and says, "All this is mere spellbinding eloquence handed down [from olden times]! 24 This is not but the word of a human being." 25 I will cast him into hell. 26 What do you think Hell-fire is? 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 It scorches the mortal. 29 Above it are nineteen guards. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire. We have specified their number only as a trial for those who are bent on denying the truth, so that those who were given the Book might gain in certainty, and those who believe might increase in faith -- and so that neither those who have been given the Scripture nor the believers might have any doubts, and that those sick at heart and those who deny the truth might ask, "What does God mean by this parable?" In this way, God lets go astray whom He wills, and guides whom He wills. And none knows the forces of your Lord but He. This is but a Reminder for man. 31
