The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night when it envelopeth, 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 And Him who created the male and female, 3 Verily, [O men,] you aim at most divergent ends! 4 Thus, as for him who gives [to others] and is conscious of God, 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 We shall surely ease him to the Path of Easing; 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 And denied the best matter, 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 and their wealth will be of no benefit to them when they face destruction. 11 Surely upon Us rests the guidance, 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 I have warned you about the fierce blazing fire 14 in which none shall be roasted except the most wretched sinner, 15 who gives the lie to the truth and turns away [from it]. 16 He will be far away from the most pious. (The first Caliph S. Abu Bakr Siddiq) 17 [He] who gives [from] his wealth to purify himself 18 And who hath no favour from anyone to recompense. 19 except the pleasure of their Lord, the Most High 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
