Al-Balad
The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
۞ Nay! I swear by this city 1 And thou art an indweller of this city - 2 And the begetter and that which he begat, 3 That We created man in toil and trouble. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 He may say (boastfully); Wealth have I squandered in abundance! 6 Does he, then, think that no one sees him? 7 Did We not assign unto him two eyes 8 a tongue, and two lips, 9 And did We not guide him to the two elevated things? 10 But he has made no effort to pass on the path that is steep. 11 and what shall teach thee what is the steep? 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 Or the feeding on a day of hunger. 14 The orphan near in relationship, 15 Or some poor wretch in misery, 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 Such are they that have attained to righteousness; 18 whereas those who are bent on denying the truth of Our messages - they are such as have lost themselves in evil, 19 The Fire will vault them over. 20
