The Thamud (people) rejected the messengers. 141 Their brother Salih asked them, "Why do you not fear God? 142 Verily I am unto you an apostle trusted. 143 So fear God and follow me. 144 'I ask of you no wage for this; my wage falls only upon the Lord of all Being. 145 (Do you think) you will be left secure here 146 In these gardens and these springs, 147 sown fields, and palms with slender spathes? 148 And dwellings hewed out of mountains ingeniously? 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 Do not follow those who are extravagant, 151 who spread evil in the land with no reform." 152 They said: "You are only of those bewitched! 153 You are but a man like ourselves, so bring a sign, if you should be of the truthful." 154 He said, "Here is a she-camel. She shall have her turn of drinking, as you have yours, each on an appointed day, 155 "Touch her not with harm, lest the Penalty of a Great Day seize you." 156 Then they hamstrung her; and then they became regretful. 157 for the suffering [predicted by Salih,] befell them [then and there]. In this [story,] behold, there is a message [unto men,] even though most of them will not believe [in it]. 158 And verily thy Lord is He, the Exalted in Might, Most Merciful. 159
