a large group of the earlier people 39 and many from the later generations. 40 And the companions of the left - what are the companions of the left? 41 In scorching wind and scalding water 42 and a shade of thick, pitch-black smoke, 43 neither cool nor good. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 And they were wont to say: when we have died and become dust and bones, shall we, then, verily be raised? 47 And so will our fathers?" 48 Say (unto them, O Muhammad): Lo! those of old and those of later time 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 you shall eat of a tree called Zakkoum, 52 And filling with it your bellies 53 Then drink over it of boiling water; 54 and you will drink as the lapping of thirsty camels. 55 This is their reception on the Day of Justice. 56 We have created you, then why would you not confirm it? 57 Have you considered the seed? 58 Did you create it or was it We who created it? 59 We have decreed death among you, and We are not to be outdone 60 To transfigure you and create you in (forms) that you know not. 61 You certainly knew about (your) first development. Why do you not take heed? 62 Have you thought about what crops you plant? 63 Is it you who makes it grow, or are We the grower? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 Surely we are burdened with debt: 66 Aye! we are deprived! 67 Have ye observed the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds or We? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 Behold! the fire which ye strike out: 71 Is it you who grew its tree, or is it We Who create? 72 We have made it as a reminder and convenience for the needy. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
