The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
A supplicant asked for a punishment bound to happen 1 which will inevitably seize the disbelievers. 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 So, (O Prophet), persevere with gracious perseverance. 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 And We see it nigh. 7 The Day that the sky will be like molten brass, 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 And his nearest kindred who shelter him 13 And all that are in the earth, if then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! It will be the fierce flame 15 Taking away (burning completely) the head skin! 16 It calls out to him who reverted and turned away. 17 And accumulated wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Indeed, man is born impatient: 19 When they are afflicted, they complain, 20 And niggardly when good reaches him;- 21 except those that pray 22 Those who remain steadfast to their prayer; 23 And those within whose wealth is a known right 24 For the needy and those dispossessed, 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 And those who are fearful of their Lord's torment 27 Indeed, the punishment of their Lord is not that from which one is safe - 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 but any who seeks to go beyond that, it is indeed they who are the transgressors, 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and perform their witnessings, 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 Those shall be in Gardens, high-honoured. 35
