The Town (Al-Balad)
20 verses, revealed in Mecca after Q (Qaaf) before The Comet (Al-Taareq)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
۞ I swear by this city -- 1 And you are free (from sin, to punish the enemies of Islam on the Day of the conquest) in this city (Makkah). 2 by the begetter, and that he begot, 3 that We have created man into a life of toil and trial. 4 Thinks he that none can overcome him? 5 He says: "I have wasted a great deal of wealth." 6 Deemest he that none beholdeth him? 7 Have We not given him two eyes, 8 and a tongue, and a pair of lips, 9 and shown him the two paths? 10 But he could not scale the steep ascent. 11 And what do you know what that difficult steep is? 12 It is the setting free of a slave 13 or the feeding in times of famine 14 of an orphaned relative 15 Or to the poor man lying in the dust. 16 And moreover to be of those who accepted faith, and who urged patience to one another and who urged graciousness to one another. 17 These are the People of the Right Hand. 18 But those who disbelieve Our revelations, their place will be on the left hand. 19 and the Fire will close in on them. 20
God Almighty has spoken the truth.
