The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 To the disbelievers; of it there is no preventer. 2 from God, the Lord of the Stairways. 3 (Whereby) the angels and the Spirit ascend unto Him in a Day whereof the span is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him). 5 they see it as being far off; 6 And We behold it nigh. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains will become like tufts of wool, 9 And friend shall not ask of friend 10 though they are in sight of each other. To ransom himself from the punishment of that Day, the sinner will wish that he might even ransom himself by his sons, 11 And his spouse and his brother. 12 And his family who had stood by him, 13 And all, all that is on earth,- so it could deliver him: 14 No! Indeed, it is the Flame [of Hell], 15 A fire that melts the hide. 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Verily, man (disbeliever) was created very impatient; 19 when evil visits him, impatient, 20 but when good comes upon him, he is grudging 21 save those that pray 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 And those in whose wealth is a recognised right. 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and go in fear of the punishment of their Lord, 27 Surely the chastisement of their Lord is (a thing) not to be felt secure of-- 28 who guard their privates 29 Except with their wives and the bondwomen in their possession, for there is no reproach on them. 30 but whoever goes beyond this is a transgressor; 31 and who preserve their trusts and their covenant, 32 And those who stand firm in their testimonies. 33 and who are constant in their prayers. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
