The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 Arise and warn! 2 And your Lord glorify 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 and flee from the statues! 5 Do not give, thinking to gain greater 6 and be patient unto thy Lord. 7 When the trumpet is sounded,. 8 So that is a tough day. 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave Me and him whom I created alone, 11 and whom I have granted abundant wealth 12 And children to be by his side! 13 and for whom I have smoothed the way (to power and riches), 14 Then he desires that I should add more. 15 By no means! He has been stubbornly hostile to Our revelation: 16 I will constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 May he be accursed, how he planned! 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 Then he looked, 21 Then he frowned and scowled; 22 then he retreated and grew proud 23 and said: “This (Qur'an) is merely a sorcery of yore; 24 It is nothing but the word of a mortal' 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 What could make you conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 It strips away the hide of man. 29 Above it are nineteen guards. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
