Al-Layl
The Night (Al-Layl)
21 verses, revealed in Mecca after The All High (Al-A'alaa) before Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the night when it covers 1 By the day when it appeareth in glory, 2 And by Him Who created male and female; 3 surely your striving is to diverse ends. 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 and believes in the truth of the ultimate good 6 We will pave his way to ease. 7 But as for him who is a miser, and self-sufficient, 8 And gives the lie to the best,- 9 We will ease him toward difficulty. 10 When he falls (into Hell), his wealth will not help him. 11 BEHOLD, it is indeed for Us to grace [you] with guidance; 12 And lo! unto Us belong the latter portion and the former. 13 Therefore do I warn you of a Fire blazing fiercely; 14 None shall enter it save the most wretched, 15 Who give the lie to Truth and turn their backs. 16 And avoid it shall the most pious, 17 Who giveth away his substance that he may be cleansed, 18 And no one has with him any boon for which he should be rewarded, 19 seeking only the Face of his Lord, the Most High, 20 Will surely be gratified. 21
True are the words of God the Almighty.
