The great ones among Pharaoh's people said: "Verily, this is indeed a sorcerer of great knowledge, 109 He would drive you forth from your land; so what is it that ye enjoin? 110 They said, "Postpone [the matter of] him and his brother and send among the cities gatherers 111 who should bring to you every skillful magician." 112 And so the sorcerers came to Fir'aun (Pharaoh). They said: "Indeed there will be a (good) reward for us if we are the victors." 113 He said: Yes, and you shall certainly be of those who are near (to me). 114 They said: "O Musa (Moses)! Either you throw (first), or shall we have the (first) throw?" 115 He said, "Throw," and when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people and struck terror into them, and they presented a great [feat of] magic. 116 And [then] We inspired Moses, "Throw down thy staff!" - and lo! it swallowed up all their deceptions: 117 ۞ Thus was the truth established, and their doings proved in vain. 118 Pharaoh and his men were defeated and put to shame, 119 The sorcerers fell to the ground in homage, 120 They said: We believe in the Lord of the worlds, 121 The Lord of Musa and Harun. 122 But Pharaoh said: "You have come to accept belief in Him without my permission! This surely is a plot you have hatched to expel the people from the land. You will soon come to know. 123 "Surely, I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, then I will crucify you all." 124 They said: Surely to our Lord shall we go back: 125 for thou takest vengeance on us only because we have come to believe in our Sustainer's messages as soon as they came to us. O our Sustainer! Shower us with patience in adversity, and make us die as men who have surrendered themselves unto Thee!" 126
