A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and a throng of the later folk. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 In hot wind and boiling water, 42 scalding water and under a shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor pleasant. 44 Verily they have been heretofore affluent. 45 But persisted in that greater sin, 46 And they used to say, “When we are dead and have turned into dust and bones, will we surely be raised again?” 47 Will our ancient forefathers be resurrected too? 48 Say: 'Those of ancient times and those of later times 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers – 51 You will indeed eat from the Zaqqum tree. 52 filling your bellies with it; 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 And drink as drinks the thirsty camel. 55 Such will be their dwelling on the Day of Judgment. 56 We have created you, so why do you not believe? 57 Have you ever considered that [seed] which you emit? 58 did you create it or did We? 59 We have ordained death among you and We are not to be overcome, 60 That We may transfigure you and make you what ye know not. 61 And indeed, you have already known the first form of creation (i.e. the creation of Adam), why then do you not remember or take heed? 62 Have you considered the seeds you till? 63 Is it you who cause it to grow - or are We the cause of its growth? 64 If We so pleased, We could turn your harvest into chaff. Then you would start lamenting, 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Did you send it down from the clouds, or did We send it? 69 If We pleased, We would have made it salty; why do you not then give thanks? 70 Have you ever considered the fire which you kindle? 71 Was it ye who made the tree thereof to grow, or were We the grower? 72 We! it is We Who made it a reminder and a provision unto the campers. 73 So glorify the name of your Lord, the Supreme. 74
