In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
O THOU enwrapped one! 1 Keep awake [in prayer] at night, all but a small part 2 A half thereof, or abate a little thereof, 3 Or a little more; and recite the Quran (aloud) in a slow, (pleasant tone and) style. 4 Behold, We shall cast upon thee a weighty word; 5 Surely getting up at night is the best means of subduing the self and is more suitable for uprightness in speech. 6 Verily, there is for you by day prolonged occupation with ordinary duties, 7 And remember the name of your Lord and devote yourself to Him with [complete] devotion. 8 He is the only Lord, so choose Him as your guardian. 9 Bear patiently with what they say, and ignore them politely. 10 Leave to Me those who belie, those who lead a life of pleasure, and bear with them yet a little while. 11 With Us are Fetters (to bind them), and a Fire (to burn them), 12 And food that chokes and a painful punishment, 13 (They will come across all this) on the Day when the earth and the mountains shall tremble violently and the mountains shall crumble into heaps of scattered sand. 14 Verily, We have sent to you (O men) a Messenger (Muhammad SAW) to be a witness over you, as We did send a Messenger [Musa (Moses)] to Fir'aun (Pharaoh). 15 But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a ruinous seizure. 16 Then how can you avoid the punishment, if you disbelieve, on a Day that will make the children grey-headed (i.e. the Day of Resurrection)? 17 The heaven will break apart therefrom; ever is His promise fulfilled. 18 Indeed, this is a reminder, so whoever wills may take to his Lord a way. 19
