The Night (Al-Layl)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
By the night as it veils [the earth] in darkness, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 And Him Who hath created male and female, 3 surely your strivings are divergent. 4 As for him who giveth and is dutiful (toward Allah) 5 and believes in the finest, 6 We will indeed make smooth for him the path to Bliss. 7 But as for one who is miserly and unheeding, 8 and cries lies to the reward most fair, 9 We shall facilitate for him the way to Hardship, 10 And his substance will avail him not when he perisheth. 11 Surely, in Our hands is guidance, 12 and, behold, Ours is [the dominion over] the life to come as well as [over] this earlier part [of your life]: 13 So I have warned you of a Fire which is blazing. 14 whereat none but the most wretched shall be roasted, 15 who have rejected the (Truth) and have turned away from it. 16 For, distant from it shall remain he who is truly conscious of God: 17 Who gives away his wealth, purifying himself 18 and owes no favour to anyone, which is to be repaid, 19 But only the desire to seek for the Countenance of their Lord Most High; 20 He verily will be content. 21
