Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha'. Mim. 1 By the Clear Book 2 that We sent down during a Blessed Night. We are ever warning. 3 Therein (that night) is decreed every matter of ordainments. 4 As a command from before Us. Verily We were to become senders: 5 A mercy from your Lord; indeed He only is the All Hearing, the All Knowing. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, if you would be sure. 7 There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Rather they are in doubt, playing. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. – 10 covering the people; this is a painful chastisement. 11 Thereupon they will say, “O our Lord! Remove the punishment from us – we now accept faith.” 12 How will there be for them a reminder [at that time]? And there had come to them a clear Messenger. 13 Whereas they had then turned away from him and said, “He is a madman, tutored!”? 14 We shall indeed remove the Penalty for a while, (but) truly ye will revert (to your ways). 15 On the day when We shall seize them with the greater seizure, (then) in truth We shall punish. 16 ۞ And indeed We tried before them Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) people, when there came to them a noble Messenger [i.e. Musa (Moses)], 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 And [saying], "Be not haughty with Allah. Indeed, I have come to you with clear authority. 19 I seek protection from my Lord and your Lord from your decision of stoning me. 20 If you do not want to believe, leave me alone". 21 (But they were aggressive), so he [Musa (Moses)] called upon his Lord (saying): "These are indeed the people who are Mujrimun (disbelievers, polytheists, sinners, criminals, etc.)." 22 (His Lord answered): 'Set out with My worshipers in the night, for you will surely be followed. 23 Then leave the sea calm they are an army that will be drowned. 24 How many were the gardens, springs, 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 Even so; and We caused to inherit them another people. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
