A company of the former peoples 39 And a multitude of those of later time. 40 As for the people on the left hand, how miserable they will be! 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 Neither cool nor agreeable. 44 Lo! heretofore they were effete with luxury 45 and persisted in the great sin 46 And they used to say: When we are dead and have become dust and bones, shall we then, forsooth, be raised again, 47 What, and our fathers, the ancients?' 48 Say: 'The ancients, and the later folk 49 shall all be brought together on an appointed Day. 50 Then you, you misguided ones, who deny the truth, 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 and fill your bellies with it, 53 and on top of this you will drink boiling water 54 Drinking the way thirsty camels drink. 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 It is We Who created you, so why do you not accept the truth? 57 Have you thought about what (sperm) you ejaculate? 58 Is it you who create it - or are We the source of its creation? 59 It is We Who have ordained death among you, and We have not been beaten – 60 In the matter of exchanging you for others, and to transform you into what you do not know. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Have you seen what you sow? 63 Is it you that make it grow, or are We the Grower? 64 If We willed, We verily could make it chaff, then would ye cease not to exclaim: 65 crying, "We have been left to suffer loss. 66 Rather, we have been prevented' 67 Have you considered the water you drink? 68 Is it you that send it down from the clouds, or are We the senders? 69 Did We will, We would make it bitter; so why are you not thankful? 70 See ye the Fire which ye kindle? 71 Is it you who made the tree thereof to grow, or are We the Grower? 72 We have made it as a reminder of hell and as a utility for travellers in the jungle. 73 (Muhammad), glorify your Lord, the Great One. 74
