The Night (Al-Layl)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the night, when it envelops, 1 and by the day when it breaks in its glory, 2 and by the creation of the male and the female. 3 Lo! your effort is dispersed (toward divers ends). 4 Yet he who gives to others and has fear, 5 and believes in the truth of what is right, 6 Unto him therefore We shall indeed make easy the path to ease. 7 But he who is greedy miser and thinks himself self-sufficient. 8 And gives the lie to Al-Husna (see Verse No: 6 footnote); 9 Surely We will ease his way unto adversity. 10 And his wealth will not avail him when he perishes. 11 Verily We take upon Ourselves to guide, 12 And verily unto Us (belong) the End and the Beginning. 13 Therefore I have warned you of a Fire blazing fiercely (Hell); 14 Which only the most wretched must endure, 15 Who had denied and turned away. 16 Far removed from it will be the righteous 17 who spend for the cause of God and purify themselves. 18 And no one has done a favour to him, for which he should be compensated. 19 But only seeking the Countenance of his Lord the Most High. 20 and he shall surely be satisfied. 21
