The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 stand up, deliver your warning, 2 Glorify your Lord, 3 and purify your robes, 4 Pollution shun! 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 And be patient for the sake of your Lord (i.e. perform your duty to Allah)! 7 When the trumpet is sounded,. 8 It will be a day of distress, 9 not of ease, for all who [now] deny the truth! 10 Leave Me (to deal) with him whom I created lonely, 11 and to whom I have granted resources vast, 12 And sons abiding in his presence 13 And made several preparations for him. 14 Yet he desires that I should give more. 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 I shall soon constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 And once more let him be cursed, how he plotted! 20 Then he looked round; 21 frowned and scowled, 22 Then turned he back, and grew stiff-necked. 23 He said, 'This is naught but a trumped-up sorcery; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a human being!" 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It leaveth naught; it spareth naught 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 there are nineteen [angels] in charge of it -- 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
