Dawn (Al-Fajr)
In the Name of God, the Merciful, the Compassionate
By the dawn 1 And by oath of ten nights. 2 by the odd and even (8th and 9th Dhil-hajj) 3 and by the night when it departs. 4 Is this not a sufficient oath for intelligent people? 5 Seest thou not how thy Lord dealt with the 'Ad (people),- 6 [With] Iram - who had lofty pillars, 7 The like of which was not created in the lands; 8 and Thamood, who hollowed the rocks in the valley, 9 And with Pharaoh of the tent pegs 10 led rebellious lives, 11 and brought about great corruption therein: 12 Thy Lord unloosed on them a scourge of chastisement; 13 Verily thy Lord is in an ambuscade, 14 As for man, whenever his Lord trieth him by honouring him, and is gracious unto him, he saith: My Lord honoureth me. 15 However, when his Lord tests him by a measured amount of sustenance, he says, "God has disgraced me". 16 No! But you show no good to the orphan, 17 Nor do you urge one another to feed the poor, 18 And you readily devour the inheritance with greed. 19 and why do you have an excessive love of riches? 20 When the earth is crushed into small pieces 21 and when your Lord appears with rows upon rows of angels, 22 And when hell is brought that day – on that day will man reflect, but where is the time now to think? 23 He will say: "Alas the woe! Would that I had sent ahead something in my life." 24 Then on that Day Allah will chastise as none other can chastise; 25 nor will any bind as He binds. 26 'O soul at peace, 27 return to your Lord, well-pleased, well-pleasing. 28 "Enter thou, then, among My devotees! 29 Enter thou My Paradise!' 30
