These (people of the right hand) consist of many from the ancient 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 Those on the Left: how unfortunate are those on the Left! 41 In scorching wind and boiling hot water. 42 Under the shadow of thick black smoke 43 [shadows] neither cooling nor soothing. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 and they persisted obstinately in awful sin, 46 and would say: "What! After we have died and become mere dust and bones, shall we, forsooth, be raised from the dead? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say: "Verily, those of olden times and those of later times 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then indeed you, the astray, the deniers - 51 shall all eat from the Tree of al-Zaqqum, 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 "And drink Boiling Water on top of it: 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such shall be your hospitality on the Day of Recompense. 56 WE who have created you, [O men:] why, then, do you not accept the truth? 57 Just consider what you emit, 58 Do you make a human out of it, or is it We Who create? 59 We have decreed Death to be your common lot, and We are not to be frustrated 60 from changing the nature of your existence and bringing you into being [anew] in a manner [as yet] unknown to you. 61 You have certainly known the first creation. Why, then, do you not take heed? 62 Behold! that which ye sow. 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 We could turn it, if We pleased, into straw; then you would rue the day, 65 And say: "We have fallen into debt; 66 Indeed, we have been deprived of the fruits of our labour." 67 So what is your opinion regarding the water that you drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to descend from the clouds, or do We? 69 If We had so pleased, We could have made it bitter. So why would you not give thanks? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Is it you that originated its tree, or are We the Originator? 72 We, even We, appointed it a memorial and a comfort for the dwellers in the wilderness. 73 Wherefore hallow thou the name of thy Lord, the Mighty. 74
