The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
I CALL TO witness the sun and his early morning splendour, 1 and by the moon as it follows it; 2 and by the day as it reveals its glory 3 by the night when it covers the earth with darkness, 4 By the heaven and That which built it 5 And [by] the earth and He who spread it 6 by the soul and how He formed it, 7 and inspired it with its sin and its piety, 8 Prosperous is he who purifies it, 9 and those who corrupt their souls will certainly be deprived (of happiness). 10 The tribe of Thamud denied with rebellion. 11 When the most unfortunate of them broke forth with 12 Then the messenger of God said to them, "This is God's she-camel. Let her drink." 13 Then they denied him and they killed it. So their Lord destroyed them because of their sin, and made them equal in destruction (i.e. all grades of people, rich and poor, strong and weak, etc.)! 14 And He does not fear the consequence thereof. 15
