Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
59 verses, revealed in Mecca after Vanity (Al-Zukhruf) before Kneeling (Al-Jaatheyah)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
Ha Mim. 1 By the Book that makes things clear; 2 We sent it (this Quran) down on a blessed night [(i.e. night of Qadr, Surah No: 97) in the month of Ramadan, the 9th month of the Islamic calendar]. Verily, We are ever warning [mankind that Our Torment will reach those who disbelieve in Our Oneness of Lordship and in Our Oneness of worship]. 3 Therein is decreed every affair of wisdom 4 at a behest from Ourselves: for, verily, We have always been sending [Our messages of guidance] 5 A mercy from thy Lord. Verily He! He is the Hearer, the Knower. 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. 7 There is no deity save Him: He grants life and deals death: He is your Sustainer as well as the Sustainer of your forebears of old. 8 Nay, but they play in doubt. 9 So you await the day when the sky will bring forth a visible smoke. 10 Covering the people, this is a painful torment. 11 (They will say:) "Our Lord! remove the Penalty from us, for we do really believe!" 12 How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, 13 yet they turned away from him and said: “This is a well-tutored madman.” 14 Surely We will remove the punishment a little, (but) you will surely return (to evil). 15 However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. 16 ۞ We tried the people of Pharaoh before them: a noble messenger was sent to them, 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 Do not consider yourselves above God. I shall show you a manifest authority (in support of my truthfulness). 19 and, behold, it is with my Sustainer - and your Sustainer - that I seek refuge against all your endeavours to revile me. 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 Then he supplicated to his Lord saying: 'These are sinful people' 22 Then (his Lord commanded): Take away My slaves by night. Lo! ye will be followed, 23 And leave the sea intervening; surely they are a host that shall be drowned. 24 They left how many gardens and fountains, 25 and sown fields, fine sitting places, 26 and other bounties which they enjoyed yet left behind! 27 As such (it was). And We made other people inherit them. 28 And the heavens and the earth wept not for them, nor were they given a respite. 29
