Al-Najm 3 of 3
(Muhammad), have you ever seen the one who has turned away (from guidance), 33 and gives so little [of himself for the good of his soul,] and so grudgingly? 34 Or, does he possess knowledge of the Unseen, and can therefore see? 35 Or has he not been told of what is in the scrolls of Moses, 36 And with Abraham who kept his word: 37 “That no bearer of a burden shall bear the burden of another, 38 And that man hath only that for which he maketh effort, 39 And that his striving shall soon be seen- 40 whereupon he shall be requited for it with the fullest requital; 41 And that unto thy Lord is the goal. 42 and that it is He who makes to laugh, and that makes to weep, 43 And that it is He who causes death and gives life 44 And that it is He Who has created the two pairs, male and female? 45 out of a [mere] drop of sperm as it is poured forth, 46 and that it is for Him to grant the second life, 47 and that it is He alone who frees from want and causes to possess; 48 And that He is the Lord of the Sirius; 49 And that He did destroy the Ad of old 50 Thamud, 51 And the people of Nuh before; surely they were most unjust and inordinate; 52 He plunged the villages 53 So that they were covered over by what they were covered over. 54 Then which of the favors of your Lord do you doubt? 55 This [Prophet] is a warner like the former warners. 56 The Day of Judgment is drawing nearer. 57 None but God can avert it. 58 So are you surprised at this fact? 59 And keep laughing and do not weep, 60 Will you remain proudly heedless? 61 So prostrate yourselves before Allah and worship. ۩ 62
True are the words of Allah the Almighty.

How does the memorization exercise algorithm work? At the lowest level 0, all words are visible. While the highest level 9 hides all words. What about at mid-level, like 3, for example? You might think that the algorithm hides precisely 3 out of every nine words. Not quite! At level 3, each word has a 3 out of 9 chance to hide, and 6 out of 9 to be visible. In other words, it is possible, but highly unlikely, for all words at level 3 to be hidden, or, that all of them to be visible! Also, at mid-levels, and in proportion to the difficulty level, hideouts can be partially incomplete or transparent so that words may be partially visible underneath.
