The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O, you, wrapped in your cloak, 1 Arise, and warn, 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 and purify your clothing, 4 and flee from the statues! 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 be patient unto your Lord. 7 For when the trumpet blows 8 That Day will be a difficult day 9 and for the disbelievers, in particular, it will not be at all easy. 10 LEAVE Me alone [to deal] with him whom I have created alone, 11 And to whom I granted extensive wealth 12 and sons to be by his side, 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 And yet he desires that I should add more! 15 Nay! Verily, he has been stubborn and opposing Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). 16 I shall force him to endure a painful uphill climb! 17 Surely he reflected and guessed, 18 (Self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! 19 Again, may he be cursed how he plotted; 20 Then he thought; 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 then he retreated and waxed proud, 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 This is not but the word of a human being." 25 Him shall I fling unto the burning. 26 And what could make thee conceive what hell-fire is? 27 It lets nothing remain and leaves nothing [unburned], 28 It glows and burns the skin. 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
