The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Compassionate, the Merciful
O YOU ENFOLDED in your mantle (of reform), 1 arise and warn, 2 and exalt your Lord, 3 purify your garments; 4 stay away from sins 5 Do not give, thinking to gain greater 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 And when the trumpet is blown, 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 Far from easy for the disbelievers. 10 Leave Me alone, (to deal) with the (creature) whom I created (bare and) alone!- 11 and designated for him ample wealth, 12 And children to be by his side! 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 Then he desires that I should add more. 15 By no means! For to Our Signs he has been refractory! 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 He reflected and then hatched a scheme. 18 And woe to him! How he plotted!- 19 Again, death seize him, how he determined! 20 Then he considered [again]; 21 Then frowned he and showed displeasure. 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 And said, “This is nothing but magic learnt from earlier men.” 24 this is nothing but the word of a mere mortal!” 25 [Hence,] I shall cause him to endure hell-fire [in the life to come]! 26 And what can make you know what is Saqar? 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 Burning the skins! 29 Over it are nineteen (angels as guardians and keepers of Hell). 30 And We have appointed none but the angels to be wardens of the Fire. And their number we have made only a trial for those who disbelieve, so that those who are vouchsafed the Book may be convinced, and that those who believe may increase in faith, and that those who are vouchsafed the Book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the infidels may say: what meaneth Allah by this description! In this wise Allah sendeth astray whomsoever He will, and guideth whomsoever He will. And none knoweth the hosts of thy Lord but He. And it is naught but an admonition unto man. 31
