Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
Ha Mim. 1 By oath of this clear Book. 2 We have indeed sent it down in a blessed night – indeed it is We Who warn. 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 By a command from Us – indeed it is We Who send. 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 There is no god but He. He quickeneth and causeth to die: your Lord and Lord of your forefathers. 8 Yet they are in doubt, playing. 9 So be on the watch for a day when heaven shall bring a manifest smoke 10 which will smother the people. They will say, "This is a painful torment. 11 Our Lord! remove from us the punishment; surely we are believers. 12 How is it possible for them to accept guidance, whereas a Noble Messenger who speaks clearly has already come to them? 13 then they turned away from him and said, 'A man tutored, possessed!' 14 Were We to ease the torment for a while, you would still revert to denial of the truth. 15 On the Day when We shall seize you with the greatest grasp. Verily, We will exact retribution. 16 ۞ And We had already tried before them the people of Pharaoh, and there came to them a noble messenger, 17 (saying:) 'Be obedient to me O worshipers of Allah. I am your honest Messenger. 18 And saying, “And do not rebel against Allah; I have brought a clear proof to you.” 19 And surely I take refuge with my Lord and your Lord that you should stone me to death: 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 Moses addressed his Lord, saying, "Lord, these people are sinners". 22 And [God said]: "Go thou forth with My servants by night, for you will surely be pursued; 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 How many gardens and fountains did they leave behind, 25 And crops and noble sites 26 And goodly things wherein they rejoiced; 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 So the heaven and the earth did not weep for them, nor were they respited. 29
