The Sun (Al-Shams)
In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful
I swear by the sun and its brilliance, 1 and the moon as it reflects the sun! 2 and by the day as it displays the sun's glory, 3 And by the night as it conceals it (the sun); 4 by the heavens and that (Power) which established them, 5 By the Earth and its (wide) expanse: 6 And the soul and Him Who made it perfect, 7 Then He showed him what is wrong for him and what is right for him; 8 those who purify their souls will certainly have everlasting happiness 9 and those who corrupt their souls will certainly be deprived (of happiness). 10 In their presumptuous insolence the Thamud called the Truth a lie 11 What time the greatest wretch of them rose up. 12 Then the apostle of Allah said unto them: beware of the she-camel of Allah and her drink. 13 But they called him a liar and slaughtered her, therefore their Lord crushed them for their sin and levelled them (with the ground). 14 He did not fear the consequences. 15
