The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
O THOU [in thy solitude] enfolded! 1 arise, and warn! 2 And proclaim the Purity of your Lord. 3 And thine raiment purify. 4 And stay away from idols. 5 And give not a thing in order to have more (or consider not your deeds of Allah's obedience as a favour to Allah). 6 And for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 When the trumpet is sounded,. 8 Surely that day will be a day of anguish, 9 It will not be easy for those who deny the truth. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 And give him vast riches, 12 and children as [love's] witnesses, 13 and made all things smooth for him; 14 and who still desires more. 15 Never. He is refractory of Our signs. 16 and I shall constrain him to a hard ascent. 17 For lo! he did consider; then he planned - 18 and thus he destroys himself, the way he meditates: 19 Again (self-)destroyed is he, how he planned! - 20 Then he looked around, 21 and then he frowns and glares, 22 then he retreated, and waxed proud. 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 "This is nothing but the word of a mortal!" 25 Soon will I cast him into Hell-Fire! 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It leaves nothing, nor does it spare; 28 making [all truth] visible to mortal man. 29 Above it are nineteen. 30 And We have set none but angels as Guardians of the Fire; and We have fixed their number only as a trial for Unbelievers,- in order that the People of the Book may arrive at certainty, and the Believers may increase in Faith,- and that no doubts may be left for the People of the Book and the Believers, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the Unbelievers may say, "What symbol doth Allah intend by this?" Thus doth Allah leave to stray whom He pleaseth, and guide whom He pleaseth: and none can know the forces of thy Lord, except He and this is no other than a warning to mankind. 31
