Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
Ha Mim 1 By the manifest Book (this Quran) that makes things clear, 2 that We have revealed the Quran on a blessed night to warn mankind. 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 Amran (i.e. a Command or this Quran or the Decree of every matter) from Us. Verily, We are ever sending (the Messengers), 5 As Mercy from thy Lord: for He hears and knows (all things); 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them; if you people believe. 7 There is no god except He. He revives and causes to die. (He is) your Lord and the Lord of your fathers, the ancients. 8 Nay, but they [who lack inner certainty] are but dying with their doubts. 9 Therefore keep waiting for the day when the heaven shall bring an evident smoke, 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 [They will say], "Our Lord, remove from us the torment; indeed, we are believers." 12 How can a warning benefit them? The Apostle who explained all things clearly had come to them, 13 but then they turned away from him, saying: 'He is tutored, mad' 14 We shall remove the torment for a while but you will revert to your old ways. 15 But on that Day We will assault them most mightily, and then We shall revenge! 16 ۞ We did, before them, try the people of Pharaoh: there came to them a messenger most honourable, 17 saying, 'Deliver to me God's servants; I am for you a faithful Messenger, 18 "And be not arrogant as against Allah: for I come to you with authority manifest. 19 I have sought refuge with my Lord and your Lord lest you stone me [to death]. 20 'But if so be that you believe me not, go you apart from me!' 21 And he cried unto his Lord, (saying): These are guilty folk. 22 We commanded him, “Journey with My bondmen in a part of the night – you will be pursued.” 23 And leave the sea behind at rest, for lo! they are a drowned host. 24 How much they left behind of gardens and springs 25 And cornfields and noble places! 26 And the comfort they enjoyed. 27 Thus it was; and We made another people inherit all that. 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
