Jonah, too, was one of the Messengers. 139 When he ran away to a ship completely laden, 140 and sailed away in a laden ship, wherein people cast lots. Because he lost, he was thrown into the water. 141 So the whale swallowed him, for he was blameworthy, 142 And were he not one of those who praise. – 143 He would have tarried in the belly thereof till the Day when they are raised. 144 ۞ Then We cast him on a bare desert whilst he was sick. 145 And We grew a tree of gourd (as a shelter) above him. 146 We sent him as a messenger to a hundred thousand people or more, 147 And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment [of life] for a time. 148 Therefore ask them (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him), whether the daughters are for your Lord and the sons for them! 149 Or created We the angels females while they were present? 150 Verily, it is of their falsehood that they (Quraish pagans) say: 151 'God has begotten?' They are truly liars. 152 Has He chosen daughters above sons? 153 What is amiss with you and your judgment? 154 What, and will you not remember? 155 Do you have any clear authority for such claims? 156 Bring your Book, if what you say is true! 157 They assert kinship between Him and the angels. But the angels know that they (the liars) will be arraigned (in Hell). 158 Glorified is Allah! (He is Free) from what they attribute unto Him! 159 Not thus, however, [behave] God's true servants: 160 Therefore you and all what you worship. (The disbelievers and their deities.) 161 cannot mislead anyone 162 Except he who is to [enter and] burn in the Hellfire. 163 There is not one of us but hath his known position. 164 Verily, we (angels), we stand in rows for the prayers (as you Muslims stand in rows for your prayers); 165 “And indeed we are those who say His purity.” 166 What though they would say, 167 “If we had some advice from the earlier generations,” – 168 we would surely have been Allah's chosen servants.” 169 But (now that the Quran has come) they disbelieve therein (i.e. in the Quran and in Prophet Muhammad SAW, and all that which he brought, the Divine Revelation), so they will come to know! 170 Already Our Word has preceded to Our servants, the Envoys; 171 Most surely they shall be the assisted ones 172 and that Our hosts shall triumph. 173 So turn away (O Muhammad SAW) from them for a while, 174 and see, and soon they too shall see. 175 What, do they seek to hasten Our chastisement? 176 But when it descends in their territory, then evil is the morning of those who were warned. 177 And turn thou aside from them for a season. 178 And see, for they are going to see. 179 Exalted be your Lord, the Lord of Glory, above what they attribute to Him, 180 So peace be on the messengers, 181 and praise belongs to God, the Lord of all Being. 182
