A (goodly) number from those of old, 39 and a multitude of the later people. 40 As for the Companions of the Left 41 They will be in the midst of scorching wind and boiling water, 42 in the shadow of a smoking blaze, 43 Neither cool nor honorable. 44 Before they lived at ease, 45 And were persisting in great sin (joining partners in worship along with Allah, committing murders and other crimes, etc.) 46 and they used to say, "What! After we have died and become dust and bones, shall we indeed be raised up again? 47 "(We) and our fathers of old?" 48 Say thou: verily the ancients and those of later generations: 49 Are going to be assembled on the appointed time of a Day Known. 50 Then verily ye, O ye erring, denying people. 51 "Ye will surely taste of the Tree of Zaqqum. 52 You shall fill your bellies with it, 53 And thereon ye will drink of boiling water, 54 And will drink as the drinking of thirsty camels. 55 Such will be their entertainment on the Day of Requital! 56 We have created you, why do you not then assent? 57 So what is your opinion regarding the semen you discharge? 58 Is it ye who create it, or are We the Creators? 59 It is We Who ordained death upon you and We are not to be frustrated. 60 In that We will change your likenesses and produce you in that [form] which you do not know. 61 And certainly you know the first growth, why do you not then mind? 62 Have you considered the soil you till? 63 Is it ye who foster it, or are We the Fosterer? 64 If We willed, We could make it [dry] debris, and you would remain in wonder, 65 [Saying], "Indeed, we are [now] in debt; 66 nay; we have been undone!” 67 See ye the water which ye drink? 68 Is it you who cause it to come down from the clouds - or are We the cause of its coming down? 69 If We so pleased, We certainly could make it salty. Why, then, are you not grateful? 70 So what is your opinion regarding the fire which you kindle? 71 Did you make its timber to grow, or did We make it? 72 It is We who have made it a means to remind [you of Us,] and a comfort for all who are lost and hungry in the wilderness [of their lives]. 73 Therefor (O Muhammad), praise the name of thy Lord, the Tremendous. 74
