Thamood, belied their Messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said to them, 'Will you not be godfearing? 142 "I am to you a messenger worthy of all trust. 143 So keep your duty to Allah and obey me. 144 “And I do not ask from you any fee for it; my reward is only upon the Lord Of The Creation.” 145 Do you believe that you will be left here to live securely in the present state 146 amidst [these] gardens and springs 147 and cornfields, and palm-trees laden with fruit -- 148 Though ye hew out dwellings in the mountain, being skilful? 149 "But fear Allah and obey me; 150 do not obey the bidding of those who are given to excesses, 151 Who spread corruption in the earth, and reform not. 152 They replied, "Surely you are bewitched. 153 You are a mere mortal like us. Show us a miracle if you are telling the Truth". 154 Salih said: "This is a she-camel. There is a day set for her to drink and there is a day set for you to drink. 155 Do not touch her with malice so that punishment of a dreadful day seizes you' 156 But they hamstrung her, then regretted; 157 So the torment took hold of them: verily herein is a sign, but most of them are not believers. 158 Yet verily your Lord is mighty and merciful. 159
