He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ (The Prophet (Peace be upon him)) frowned and turned away, 1 from a blind man who had come up to him. 2 And what do you know, he may be of the pure! 3 Or that he might receive admonition, and that the admonition might profit him? 4 As for him who thinks himself self-sufficient, 5 To him dost thou attend; 6 Yet it is not thy concern if he grow not (in grace). 7 But as for him who cometh unto thee with earnest purpose 8 And he feareth 9 you ignore him. 10 No indeed; this is only a Reminder. 11 So whoever wishes may remember it. 12 It is set down on honoured pages, 13 Exalted, Purified, 14 (Written) by the hands of scribes- 15 and angelic scribes. 16 Be cursed (the disbelieving) man! How ungrateful he is! 17 From what thing doth He create him? 18 Out of a drop of sperm! He creates and proportions him, 19 Then doth He make His path smooth for him; 20 Then causeth him to die, and burieth him; 21 Then when He listeth, He shall raise him to life. 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 Let man reflect on the food he eats. 24 How We pour water in showers 25 Then We cracked the earth open under pressure (of germination) 26 And We made corn grow, 27 and vines, and reeds, 28 And olive-trees and palm-trees 29 And dense gardens, 30 and fruits, and pastures, 31 In order to benefit you and your cattle. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 The day on which a man shall fly from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father 35 his wife and his children. 36 every man that day shall have business to suffice him. 37 (Many) faces on that day shall be bright, 38 laughing, rejoicing at glad tidings. 39 but some faces will be covered with dust 40 and covered by darkness. 41 These will be the faces of the sinful disbelievers. 42
