The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O thou enveloped! 1 Arise and deliver thy warning! 2 proclaim the greatness of your Lord, 3 purify your garments; 4 stay away from sins 5 Give not, thinking to gain greater 6 Exercise patience to please your Lord. 7 For when the Trump is sounded 8 that very Day shall be a day of anguish, 9 Dolorous for the unbelievers. 10 Leave him to Me whom I created alone, 11 And then granted him resources in abundance. 12 and sons ever present with him, 13 To whom I made (life) smooth and comfortable! 14 Yet he desireth that I should give more. 15 Nay! Verily, he has been stubborn and opposing Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, verses, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). 16 I shall oblige him to (climb a slippery mountain in the Hell-fire called As-Sa'ud, or to) face a severe torment! 17 Behold, [when Our messages are conveyed to one who is bent on denying the truth,] he reflects and meditates [as to how to disprove them] 18 death seize him, how he determined! 19 yea, he destroys himself, the way he meditates! 20 Then he thought; 21 Then frowned and grimaced. 22 then turned back, and swelling-up with pride, 23 Then said he: "This is nothing but magic, derived from of old; 24 “This is nothing but the speech of a man.” 25 Anon shall I roast him into the Scorching Fire. 26 Would that you really knew what hell is! 27 It leaves naught nor does it spare aught. 28 Darkening and changing the colour of man! 29 Over it are nineteen [powers]. 30 And We have not made the wardens of the fire others than angels, and We have not made their number but as a trial for those who disbelieve, that those who have been given the book may be certain and those who believe may increase in faith, and those who have been given the book and the believers may not doubt, and that those in whose hearts is a disease and the unbelievers may say: What does Allah mean by this parable? Thus does Allah make err whom He pleases, and He guides whom He pleases, and none knows the hosts of your Lord but He Himself; and this is naught but a reminder to the mortals. 31
