The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the name of God, The Most Gracious, The Dispenser of Grace
Someone has (needlessly) demanded to experience the torment (of God), 1 those who deny the truth. [Know, then, that] nothing can ward it off, 2 (A punishment) from Allah, the Owner of the Elevated Passages. 3 Whereby the angels ascend unto Him and also the spirit, On a Day whereof the measure is fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him). 5 Verily they think that the chastisement is far off, 6 but We see it near. 7 It shall befall on a Day whereon the sky will become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains become like wool, 9 And no friend will ask of a friend, 10 Though they will be given sight of them. The guilty man will long to be able to ransom himself from the punishment of that day at the price of his children 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 And his kin that sheltered him. 13 And all those who are in the earth – then only if the redemption saves him! 14 By no means! Surely it is a flaming fire 15 snatching away the scalp, 16 and drag into it anyone who has turned away (from obeying God), 17 who amassed and hoarded. 18 ۞ Indeed, mankind was created anxious: 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 when good visits him, grudging, 21 Except those who closely follow (the Book of God), 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 those in whose wealth is a right known 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Recompense, 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Verily! The torment of their Lord is that before which none can feel secure, 28 And those who guard their chastity, 29 except from their wives and slave girls, in which case they are not to be blamed, 30 But whosoever seeks beyond that, they are the transgressors. 31 And those who are to their trusts and promises attentive 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 And those who are mindful of their moral obligations. 34 These it is who in the gardens [of paradise] shall be honoured! 35
