The Hidden Secret (Al-Muddath-thir)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O you who covers himself [with a garment], 1 arise, and warn! 2 And proclaim the Purity of your Lord. 3 cleanse your clothes, 4 And banish all trepidation. 5 and bestow not favour in order to seek from others a greater return, 6 and for the sake of your Lord, be patient. 7 For when the trumpet is sounded, 8 that will surely be a hard day, 9 For the infidels, not easy. 10 Leave to Me the one, whom I have created all by Myself, 11 whom I have endowed with abundant riches, 12 And children present [with him] 13 And for whom I smoothed everything. 14 then he is eager that I should do more. 15 Never will he receive more. He has been hostile to Our revelations. 16 Anon I shall afflict him with a fearful woe. 17 For he thought and he plotted;- 18 So let him be cursed! How he plotted! 19 Again, death seize him, how he determined! 20 May he be condemned again for his schemes! He looked around, 21 frowned and scowled; 22 Then he turned away, and was haughty. 23 Then he said: naught is this but magic from of old; 24 This is naught but the word of a mortal. 25 I will cast him into Hell-fire 26 And what have you understood, what hell is! 27 It does not allow to live, and neither leaves [to die,] 28 it scorches the skin; 29 and it has nineteen angelic keepers. 30 We have appointed only angels to be wardens of the Fire, and their number have We made to be a stumbling-block for those who disbelieve; that those to whom the Scripture hath been given may have certainty, and that believers may increase in faith; and that those to whom the Scripture hath been given and believers may not doubt; and that those in whose hearts there is disease, and disbelievers, may say: What meaneth Allah by this similitude? Thus Allah sendeth astray whom He will, and whom He will He guideth. None knoweth the hosts of thy Lord save Him. This is naught else than a Reminder unto mortals. 31
