The Town (Al-Balad)
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
۞ I swear by this city (Mecca) – 1 For you (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) are in this city. 2 And by the begetter and that which he begat, 3 We have indeed created man surrounded by hardships. 4 Does he think that no one has power over him? 5 (He boasts and shows off) saying, "I have spent a great deal of money (for the cause of God)". 6 Does he think that no one has seen him? 7 Have We not made for him a pair of eyes?- 8 And a tongue, and a pair of lips?- 9 And shown unto him the two highways? 10 Yet he has not scaled the height. 11 And what shall make thee understand that which the steep is? 12 It is freeing someone's neck from slavery; 13 or giving food on a day of hunger 14 An orphan, of kin, 15 or to a destitute lying in dust; 16 and, then besides this, he be one of those who believed, and enjoined upon one another steadfastness and enjoined upon one another compassion. 17 These are the People of the Right Hand. 18 And those who disbelieve Our signs - they are the fellows of the lefthand. 19 On them is fire closed over. 20
