The Stars (Al-Najm)
In the name of Allah, most benevolent, ever-merciful
By the Star when it setteth, 1 your companion has neither strayed nor is he misguided, 2 He does not speak out of his own desires. 3 This is naught but a revelation revealed, 4 Bestowed on him by the Supreme Intellect, 5 One strong of make. Then he stood straight. 6 While he was in the higher [part of the] horizon. 7 Then he drew near and drew closer 8 two bows' length away, or nearer, 9 Then he revealed to Allah's servant whatever he had to reveal. 10 His heart did not lie of what he saw. 11 Are you, then, going to contend with him regarding what he sees with his eyes? 12 And he certainly saw him in another descent 13 Nigh unto the lote-tree at the boundary. 14 near which is the Garden of Abode. 15 When that which shroudeth did enshroud the lote-tree, 16 His sight did not waver nor was it unduly bold. 17 Indeed he saw the supreme signs of his Lord. 18 Have you ever thought about al-Lat and al-Uzza, 19 And Manat (another idol of the pagan Arabs), the other third? 20 What! For you the son, and for Him the daughter? 21 That indeed is a division most unfair! 22 these are nothing but names which you yourselves have devised, you and your forefathers. God has sent down no authority for them. They follow nothing but conjecture and what their own selves desire, even though guidance has already come to them from their Lord! 23 Or shall man have whatever he fancies? 24 To God belong the End and the Beginning. 25
