a good many of olden times, 39 And a crowd of the later. 40 And those of the left hand, how wretched are those of the left hand! 41 [They will find themselves] in the midst of scorching winds, and burning despair, 42 And shadow of black smoke, 43 Neither cool nor refreshing. 44 For, behold, in times gone by they were wont to abandon themselves wholly to the pursuit of pleasures, 45 And they persisted in the great violation. 46 And they used to say, "What! when we die and become dust and bones, shall we then indeed be raised up again?- 47 and perhaps, too, our forebears of old?" 48 Say, "Indeed, the earlier ones and the later ones 49 Are to be gathered together for the appointment of a known Day." 50 Then you, the erring and the deniers, 51 Shall surely eat of the tree of Az-Zqqum. 52 and will have to fill your bellies therewith, 53 And upon it, you will drink the hot boiling water. 54 drink it as the most insatiably thirsty camels drink!" 55 Thus shall they be entertained on the Day of Recompense. 56 We created you, why will you not believe! 57 Have you seen sperm? 58 Is it you that create it or are We the creators? 59 We have [indeed] decreed that death shall be [ever-present] among you: but there is nothing to prevent Us 60 That We may substitute others like unto you and produce you into that which ye know not. 61 And ye certainly know already the first form of creation: why then do ye not celebrate His praises? 62 Just ponder over what you sow: 63 Is it you or We Who make them grow? 64 Were it Our Will, We could crumble it to dry pieces, and you would be regretful (or left in wonderment). 65 'We are debt-loaded; 66 "Indeed are we shut out (of the fruits of our labour)" 67 Consider the water that you drink. 68 Is it you who sent it down from the clouds or is it We who have sent it down? 69 If We will We can make it bitter, so why do you not give thanks? 70 Have ye observed the fire which ye strike out; 71 Is it you who have produced its tree or is it We who have produced it? 72 We have made it a memorial (of Our handiwork), and an article of comfort and convenience for the denizens of deserts. 73 Therefore (O dear Prophet Mohammed – peace and blessings be upon him) proclaim the Purity of the name of your Lord, the Greatest. 74
