The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
In the Name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
A questioner asked concerning a torment about to befall 1 Upon the infidels -- which none would be able to repel -- 2 [It is] from Allah, owner of the ways of ascent. 3 The angels and the Ruh [Jibrael (Gabriel)] ascend to Him in a Day the measure whereof is fifty thousand years, 4 So be thou patient with a sweet patience; 5 They see the (Day) indeed as a far-off (event): 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 The day the sky becomes like molten brass, 8 And the mountains shall be as tufts of wool 9 even intimate friends will not inquire about their friends, 10 as they are given sight of them. The sinner will wish that he might ransom himself from the chastisement of that day even by his sons, 11 and of his spouse, and of his brother, 12 and his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, altogether, so that it might save him. 14 No, in truth, it is a Furnace! 15 Eager to roast; 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 And hoarded (wealth) and withheld it. 18 ۞ Truly man was created very impatient;- 19 Fretful when evil touches him; 20 And, when good befalleth him, grudging; 21 save those that pray 22 Who are at their prayer constant. 23 And those in whose wealth there is a known right, 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 And those who believe in the Day of Judgement, 26 And those who fear the displeasure of their Lord,- 27 the punishment of their Lord is not something for them to feel secure of, 28 and who are mindful of their chastity, 29 Save in regard to their spouses or those whom their right hands own; so verily they are not blameworthy 30 but those who go beyond that limit are transgressors; 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 who testify to what they have witnessed, 33 And those who of their prayer are observant. 34 such people will receive due honor in Paradise. 35
