Smoke (Al-Dukhaan)
In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful
HA MIM. 1 CONSIDER this divine writ, clear in itself and clearly showing the truth! 2 Behold, from on high have We bestowed it on a blessed night: for, verily, We have always been warning [man]. 3 During it are distributed all the works of wisdom. 4 determined as a bidding from Us, (We are ever sending) 5 as a mercy from thy Lord (surely He is the All-hearing, the All-knowing) 6 The Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that lies between them, if you really do believe. 7 there is no deity save Him: It is He who gives both life and death -- He is your Lord, and the Lord of your forefathers, 8 Yet they play about in doubt. 9 So watch for the Day when the sky will come down with a pall of smoke, 10 Which will envelop the people; this is a painful punishment. 11 Then they will say, "Lord, relieve us from this torment, for truly we are now believers in You." 12 How should they have the Reminder, seeing a clear Messenger already came to them, 13 Yet they turned their backs on him and said: One taught (by others), a madman. 14 Lo! We withdraw the torment a little. Lo! ye return (to disbelief). 15 However, We shall truly take Our revenge on the day when the great seizure takes place. 16 ۞ AND, INDEED, [long] before their time did We try Pharaoh's people [in the same way]: for there came unto them a noble apostle, [who said:] 17 Saying: "Restore to me the slaves of Allah (i.e. the Children of Israel). Verily! I am to you a Messenger worthy of all trust, 18 Do not set yourselves above God: I bring you clear authority. 19 "And truly, I seek refuge in my Lord and your Lord, lest you stone me (or call me a sorcerer or kill me). 20 If you do not believe in me, leave me alone." 21 (But they were aggressive:) then he cried to his Lord: "These are indeed a people given to sin." 22 We told him, "Leave the city with My servants during the night. You will be pursued. 23 And leave the sea behind you as calm as ever. Surely they are an army that is doomed to be drowned.” 24 How many were the gardens and the watersprings that they left behind, 25 corn-fields, gracious mansions, 26 and pleasant things in which they delighted! 27 We gave these as an inheritance to other people. 28 And the heaven and earth wept not for them, nor were they reprieved. 29
