The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 The unbelievers-- there is none to avert it-- 2 a chastisement from Allah, the Lord of the ascending steps, 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him – the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 But be patient (O Muhammad) with a patience fair to see. 5 They deem it to be remote. 6 Whereas We see it impending. 7 On the day when the heavens become like molten metal. 8 and the mountains will be like tufts of wool, 9 and no bosom friend will enquire about any of his bosom friends 10 They will be shown each other. The criminal will wish that he could be ransomed from the punishment of that Day by his children 11 And his wife and his brother, 12 the kinsmen who gave him shelter, 13 and whosoever is in the earth, all together, so that then it might deliver him. 14 By no means! for it would be the Fire of Hell!- 15 that will strip off the scalp. 16 It will summon whoever turns his back and flees, 17 and amassed wealth and hoarded it. 18 ۞ Indeed, the human was created grudging and impatient. 19 bewailing when evil befalls him, 20 and tight-fisted when good fortune visits him, 21 Not so are the prayerful. 22 who are steadfast in prayer; 23 And those in whose riches is a known right. 24 to those who ask [for help] and to the destitute; 25 And those who accept the truth of the judgment day 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 Indeed the punishment of their Lord is not a thing to be unafraid of! 28 and those who guard their private parts, 29 Except with their wives and the (captives) whom their right hands possess,- for (then) they are not to be blamed, 30 But whoever seeks beyond that, then they are the transgressors - 31 And those who are faithful to their trusts and their covenant 32 And those who are in their testimonies upright 33 And those who guard (the sacredness) of their worship;- 34 Such shall dwell in the Gardens (i.e. Paradise) honoured. 35
