The Heights (Al-Ma'aarej)
44 verses, revealed in Mecca after Incontestable (Al-Haaqqah) before The News (Al-Naba')
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
There hath asked an asker for the torment about to befall. 1 to those who deny the truth. No power can hinder God 2 From Allah, Owner of the ascending steps. 3 The angels and Jibreel, ascend towards Him the punishment will befall on a day which spans fifty thousand years. 4 Therefore patiently endure, in the best manner (O dear Prophet Mohammed peace and blessings be upon him). 5 They think that it (the Day of Judgment) is far away. 6 while We think that it is near at hand. 7 On that Day the heavens shall become like molten brass, 8 and the mountains shall be like puffs of wool. 9 And no familiar friend will ask a question of his friend 10 though they shall be within sight of each other. The guilty one will gladly ransom himself from the torment of that Day by sacrificing his own children, 11 and his spouse and his brother, 12 And the nearest of his kinsfolk who gave him shelter, 13 and of whoever [else] lives on earth, all of them - so that he could but save himself. 14 By no means! Verily, it will be the Fire of Hell! 15 Flaying off the scalp-skin. 16 It invites he who turned his back [on truth] and went away [from obedience] 17 And amasses (wealth) then shuts it up. 18 ۞ Surely man is created of a hasty temperament 19 When evil comes upon him he is impatient; 20 but when they are fortunate, they become niggardly 21 save those that pray 22 and are constant in their Prayer; 23 And in whose wealth there is a right acknowledged 24 For him who begs and for him who is denied (good) 25 And those who hold to the truth of the Day of Judgment; 26 and go in fear of the chastisement of their Lord 27 for, behold, of their Sustainer's chastisement none may ever feel [wholly] secure; 28 And those who guard their private parts 29 Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they are not to be blamed - 30 And whosoever seeketh beyond that, then it is those who are the trespassers 31 And those who keep their trusts and covenants; 32 and those who stand by their testimony 33 And those who guard their Salat (prayers) well. 34 Those shall be in gardens, honored. 35
