The Thamud gave the lie to the Messengers. 141 when their brother Salih said unto them: "Will you not be conscious of God? 142 Truly, I am a trustworthy messenger for you, 143 So keep your duty to Allah and obey me. 144 "No reward do I ask of you for it: my reward is only from the Lord of the Worlds. 145 Will ye be left secure in that which is here before us, 146 In gardens and fountains, 147 sown fields and palmtrees, with slender spathes. 148 And hew ye out houses in the mountains skilfully! 149 "Be, then, conscious of God, and pay heed unto me, 150 and obey not the commandment of the prodigal 151 who corrupt in the earth, and do not reform' 152 They said, 'Thou art merely one of those that are bewitched; 153 You are naught but a mortal like ourselves; so bring a sign if you are one of the truthful. 154 He said, 'This is a she-camel; to her a draught and to you a draught, on a day appointed, 155 And touch her not with ill, lest there take hold of you the torment of a Mighty Day. 156 So they hamstrung her, and in the morning could only regret. 157 and the chastisement seized them. Surely in that is a sign, yet most of them are not believers. 158 Your Lord, He is the Almighty, the Most Merciful. 159
