He Frowned ('Abasa)
In the Name of Allah, the Most Beneficent, the Most Merciful
۞ He frowned and turned away 1 when the blind man approached him, 2 How could you know? Perhaps he would cleanse himself, 3 Or become reminded so that the reminder should profit him? 4 As for he who is sufficed 5 you attend to him, 6 though it is not thy concern, if he does not cleanse himself. 7 As for him who comes to you striving (after goodness), 8 and fearfully, 9 him didst thou disregard! 10 NAY, VERILY, these [messages] are but a reminder: 11 So whoever wills, let him pay attention to it. 12 Inscribed in Writs honoured, 13 exalted, purified, 14 Written by the hands of emissaries. 15 Who are noble, virtuous. 16 May man be slain – how ungrateful he is! 17 From what thing did He create him? 18 From a single sperm He created, then proportioned him, 19 Then made his passage easy (at birth); 20 Then He causes him to die and be buried. 21 then, when He wills, He raises him. 22 Nay, but man did not fulfil what Allah had enjoined upon him. 23 So man must look at his food. 24 How We poured down water in torrents, 25 Then split the earth in clefts 26 and thereupon We cause grain to grow out of it, 27 grapes, and fresh fodder, 28 And the olive and the palm, 29 And enclosed Gardens, dense with lofty trees, 30 and fruits and herbage, 31 all this as a provision for you and your cattle. 32 But, when the Blast comes, 33 The day on which a man shall fly from his brother, 34 And his mother and his father 35 And his wife and his children, 36 on that Day each will be occupied with his own business, making him oblivious of all save himself. 37 on that Day some faces will be beaming, 38 laughing, rejoicing at glad tidings. 39 And other faces that Day will be dust-stained, 40 Covered with the blackness (of shame): 41 Such will be the Kafarah (disbelievers in Allah, in His Oneness, and in His Messenger Muhammad (Peace be upon him), etc.), the Fajarah (wicked evil doers). 42
