We sent Moses to the Pharaoh and his nobles with Our miracles and he said, "I am the Messenger of the Lord of the Universe". 46 Then when he came unto them with Our signs, behold! at them they were laughing. 47 And all the signs We showed them were always greater than the earlier ones; and We seized them with calamities, so that they may return. 48 But they said: "O sorcerer, call on your Lord for us in accordance with the compact He has made with you. We shall certainly come to guidance." 49 Yet no sooner did We take away the affliction from them than they broke their pledge. 50 And Firon proclaimed amongst his people: O my people! is not the kingdom of Egypt mine? And these rivers flow beneath me; do you not then see? 51 "Am I not better than this (Moses), who is a contemptible wretch and can scarcely express himself clearly? 52 Why have no armlets of gold been given him, or angels sent down successively with him' 53 So when he had brainwashed his people, they followed him; indeed they were a disobedient nation. 54 We took revenge on them by drowning them all together. 55 and so We made them a thing of the past, and an example to those who would come after them. 56
