The chiefs of Firon's people said: most surely this is an enchanter possessed of knowledge: 109 He intends to turn you out of your land. What counsel do you then give? 110 The others suggested holding Moses and his brother off and sending to all the cities 111 to summon every skilful magician to your presence.' 112 And the sorcerers came unto Pharaoh [and] said: "Verily, we ought to have a great reward if it is we who prevail." 113 He said: Yes, and you shall certainly be of those who are near (to me). 114 Then they said: 'O Moses, will you [first] throw your rod, or shall we throw?' 115 He said: Cast. So when they cast, they deceived the people's eyes and frightened them, and they produced a mighty enchantment. 116 And We inspired to Moses, "Throw your staff," and at once it devoured what they were falsifying. 117 ۞ Thus the truth prevailed, and that which they had brought vanished. 118 So they were defeated there and then, and were returned disgraced. 119 And the sorcerers were cast down, bowing themselves. 120 They said: "We believe in the Lord of the 'Alamin (mankind, jinns and all that exists). 121 The Lord of Musa and Haroun. 122 Said Pharaoh: "Have you come to believe in him ere I have given you permission? Behold, this is indeed a plot which you have cunningly devised in this [my] city in order to drive out its people hence! But in time you shall come to know, [my revenge]: 123 I shall cut off your hands and feet on the opposite sides, and then crucify you all.' 124 They said, "Indeed, to our Lord we will return. 125 You only take revenge on us because we believed in the Lord when we saw His miracles. Lord, grant us patience and let us die Muslims (submitted to God)." 126
